Locals win state fair awards
Several locals representing Thayer County vied for state ribbons and awards in many of the annual open class contests offered at the 2012 Nebraska State Fair.
In Fine Arts, Cindy Chinn, of Chester, brought home five first place awards and one second place award for her work in clay sculpture in which she was the division winner, mixed media portraits, best paintings and drawings, and textile art.
Art Whitton, of Chester, brought home seven first and second place awards for photography including photographs of domestic and wild animals, birds, landscapes, nightscapes, skyscapes and other subjects.
Gloria Bernadt, of Hebron, collected a second place prize for her crazy quilt in the Quilts division of Needlework. Bernadt also won two fourth place awards and one fifth place award in the quilting category.
Results of the Kid’s Pedal Pull were not available at press time.
In the Galaxy of Stars Talent Search, Taylor Dirks and Silvia Galvan advanced to the semi-finals in the vocal division. Dirks performed in the Nova (19 years and over) while Galvan performed in the Shooting Stars (13-18 years) division. Contest results from Sunday and Labor Day had not been announced as of press time.
