Estate Planning 101
What exactly does an executor do?
The executor is responsible for ensuring the terms outlined by the deceased in their will and estate plan are executed to completion.
A good executor needs to be patient and would benefit from some financial knowledge. That’s because as part of their duties they will need to petition and submit court documents. They will need to pay bills and submit tax returns. They also ensure all assets are distributed appropriately (which can be more complex than this sounds).
Some will appoint a professional executor because of the difficulty and the need to keep their own emotions out of the decisions.
If you have not appointed an executor for your estate, don’t take that decision lightly. Be sure to appoint someone and that the person you appoint can handle the role.
At Capstone Pacific, we can give guidance as to questions to ask a potential executor or suggest professional executors you should talk to. If you need help finding someone, please give us a call.
