Go to your favorite search engine. Type “war” or “peace” in the search window. Read the definitions. War is merely a continuation of politics, so said Von Clausewitz. Peace is the absence of conflict some think—but what do you think? Throughout history, it seems we’ve enjoyed little peace. It seems we either are fighting a war, recovering from war or preparing for the next one.
I fully realize war has bought our liberty. I fully, and sadly, know that war becomes, at times, our only option. But it is a grievously expensive option. We’ve all lost friends and loved ones to war.
This is not a feel-good post. It is a sobering reflection on what seems to be our human capacity to make war, versus making peace.
Each year on Memorial Day, we honor our fallen—and rightly so. Brave men and women remain deployed in harm’s way throughout the world. We salute you, and we honor you.
Outside the United Nations Building is a famous sculpture of an implement of war, a sword, being turned into a plowshare (a tool to till land for crops).
Imagine that—making peace by symbolizing man’s desire to put an end to war and transform tools of destruction into tools to benefit mankind. Peace has been a dream of mankind since the dawn of time. I long for peace. I know you do, too. At Capstone Pacific, we hope that time comes soon!
