Community chips in to help provide toys for Christmas
When area organizations sponsor events to help out Thayer County families, they rely on the community to help them. Two area organizations did that this Christmas season, and the community responded.
The Hebron Volunteer Fire Department was one of the organizations that aimed to help area kids this Christmas season. This group sponsored a toy drive. They set up drop offs at the Hebron Dollar General and at the primary school. In addition to that, they even had a time set up to donate toys prior to the Elementary Vocal Concert. The fire department provided the place and the community helped fill the need.
“People were very generous,” said Hebron fireman Justin Johnson. “We were able to collect 50 toys this year.”
Throughout the month of December, the fire department was able to collect those toys along with additional monetary donations. The toys collected during this time were distributed to Thayer County families with some help by Blue Valley Community Action.
Cargill in Carleton also had their own way of helping out local kids. For the fourth year, employees at Cargill helped set up an “angel tree.” This tree was adorned with tags that included a list of needed items for Thayer and Fillmore County children.
