Two Hebron men appear in district court

Lance J. Powers, 22, Hebron, was supposed to be sentenced  Thursday morning after being found guilty of attempted burglary stemming from an incident that took place over a year ago. In July 2010, he is accused of entering Tillie’s Bar and Grill in Byron and taking cigarettes valued at $293.60. Attempted burglary is a misdemeanor I.

His case was continued to Sep. 1 at 9:45 a.m., after he failed to contact a probation officer during the presentence time. Powers’ attorney Heath Stewart said it was due to a misunderstanding. District Judge Vicky Johnson allowed Powers the extra time to make contact.

In a separate case, Kevin R. Wiedel, 49, Hebron, appeared for a pretrial on a charge of felony DUS (driving under suspension), but after reaching a plea agreement filed a plea of “no contest” to attempted DUS downgrading the charge to a misdemeanor I. Sentencing is scheduled for October 6, at 10 a.m.

Both men face up to a $1,000 fine, up to one year in jail or both with no minimum.
