Hebron Lions Club Celebrates 75th Anniversary with Special Presentation

The Hebron Lions Club is celebrating its 75 Anniversary with a special get-together on October 11 at the new Stastny Community Center in Hebron.

The program will focus on the United States Naval Ammunition Depot in Hastings, with Walter Miller as the presenter.

All Nebraska Lions are invited to attend, especially past and current district governors.

A social hour will begin at 6 p.m. and a free-will meal at 7 p.m. The meal is being catered by The Acreage.

The entertainment and guest speaker will begin at approximately 7:45 p.m.

The Lions Club operates on three levels: International, state, and local.

There are 1.4 million Lions in 210 nations and areas of the world, including New Zealand, Australia, Zambia, Italy and Japan.

In their earlier years, the Lions invited Helen Keller to be a speaker at their International Convention in Cedar Point, Ohio.

“I appeal to you, Lions, you who have your sight, your hearing, you who are strong and brave and kind. Will you not constitute yourselves Knights of the Blind in this crusade against darkness?” Keller asked them.

From that day forward, the Lions Club has worked to help those in need.

They have saved the sight of more than fifteen million children by providing eye screenings and glasses through Sight for Kids.

The Lions have prevented serious vision loss for more than 30 million people worldwide, as well as establishing or strengthening pediatric eye care centers that have helped more than 120 children.

More than eight million cataract surgeries have been provided by the Lions as well.

Since 1990, the Lions have raised more than $415 million through two SightFirst fundraising campaigns.

The Lions Club also have eyeglass collection boxes, where people can donate unwanted eyeglasses. From there, they go to those who are in need of better vision, but cannot afford to do so.

The Lions in Nebraska have a vision screening program for schools. They travel around the state, offering free vision and hearing screenings for students.

They also assist with Leader Dogs for the Blind and Lions Hearing Dogs.
