Area Memorial Day Services
Hebron: Opening ceremonies will take place Monday May 28, at 10 a.m., in front of the courthouse with the advancement of colors by combined VFW Post 5328, American Legion Post 180, Sons of the American Legion and Oregon Trail Post 180 Riders.
Guest speaker for the event will be the Rev. Steven Speichinger of First Community Church in Hebron. Rev. Speichinger is a native Iowan from Sioux City and a graduate of Morningside College. Following graduation he enlisted int he United States Air Force and served at Ellsworth AFB in Rapid City, S.D. with further service at Clark AFB in the Philippines. He enrolled in the Denver Seminary following his military service and has served churches in Goodland, KS., Denver, CO., and Gilbert, AZ. He and his wife Rhonda moved to Hebron in 2006 where he serves as pastor for the First Community Church of Hebron.
A welcome address will by conducted by VFW Post 5328 commander Lonny Jacobitz and the national anthem will be performed by Thayer Central 2011 alumnus Kesston Fink.
At approximately 10:45 a.m., the ceremony will move to Rose Hill Cemetery for laying of the wreaths by the American Legion Auxiliary and 21-gun salute lead by Dorral Schleif, Sgt. at Arms. In case of rain, ceremonies will move the Hebron Country Club.
Belvidere: A Sunday morning Memorial Day service, May 27, will take place in the United Church of Christ at 10 a.m. Remarks will be given by Doug Modlin of Hebron who has two sons in the military. Locals are invited to visit the Belvidere cemetery to view the Avenue of Flags following the church service.
Bruning: The Durham-Mammen Legion Post 166 will hold a Memorial Day service, Monday, May 28, at 10 a.m., at the Bruning Opera House. The guest speaker will be Jane (Hobbs) Dodes of Hebron.
Carleton: The village of Carleton will hold its Memorial Day service at 10:30 a.m., at the Carleton cemetery.
Davenport: Captain Ricky Meers, formerly of Davenport, will be the special guest speaker at the Davenport Memorial Day Service held in the school gymnasium at 10 a.m., Monday, May 28. Meers is currently stationed at Fort Knox, Ky., with the U.S. Army Cadet Command Headquarters. He has been deployed to Iraq three times.
Hubbell: The Hubbell Legion Post 317 will hold Memorial Day services in Chester, Hubbell, and Mahaska, KS, Monday, May 28. The services begin at the Chester City Cemetery at 9:30 a.m., move to the St. John Lutheran Cemetery at 10 a.m., then move to the Zion Lutheran Cemetery at 10:30 a.m., and the Lamb Cemetery at 10:45 a.m. At 11:20 a.m., services will be held at the Mahaska, Kan., cemetery followed by a final service at 11:45 a.m., at the Hubbell Cemetery.
