Students head to state speech

County High School students participated in district speech contests last week earning entry into the state competition Thursday and Friday, March 24 and 25 at the University of Nebraska-Kearney.

Both Thayer Central and Deshler competed in C2-4 district competition at Sutton last week. For Thayer Central, two students including Russell Heitmann and Clinton Rosencrans will compete at the state level, and for Deshler, five students including Craig Meier, Tabitha Burger, Krista Schardt, Amanda Petersen and Stephanie Schroeder will head to the state event.

Thayer Central sophomore Russell Heitmann earned the district title for Persuasive Speaking and will compete in that division this week. Senior Clinton Rosencrans finished second in Entertainment Speaking earning a berth in that division at state.

Deshler junior Krista Schardt finished second in Informative Public Speaking and will compete in that division at state. Rounding out the Deshler scoring with third place finishes were sophomore Craig Meier  in Humorous Interpretation of Prose Literature, senior Tabitha Burger in Serious Interpretation of Prose Literature, and junior Amanda Petersen and senior Stephanie Schroeder in Duet Acting. Each of these students will also compete at the state level in their respective divisions.

C2-4 team scores and finishes are as follows: 1-Sutton 112; 2-Nebraska Christian 100; 3-Osceola 98; 4-Cross County 76; 5-Deshler 61; 6-Friend 56; 7-Thayer Central 54; 8-Blue Hill; 9-Diller-Odell 0.

In D2-1, both Bruning-Davenport and Shickley had winning performances and will send six and two students, respectively.

For Bruning-Davenport, the OID team including junior Jacob McGinley and sophomores Anthony Ferebee, Shane Heyen, and Nolan Schroeder captured the district title. The foursome will take their production to the state contest this  week.

Sophomore Tara Pavelka earned a second place in Persuasive Speaking and will compete at the state level, while classmate Cassidy Bentley collected a third place in Serious Interpretation of Prose Literature. She will also attend the state competition.

For Shickley, junior Anna Lichti finished third in Entertainment Speaking while classmate Marissa Hochstetler also earned third place in the Informative Public Speaking division. Both students will compete at the state event this week.

D2-1 team scores and finishes are as follows: 1-Falls City Sacred Heart 128; 2-Leigh 124; 3-Bruning-Davenport  89; 4-Hampton 79; 5 (T)-Dodge 69; 5(T)-Shickley 69; 6-Parkview Christian 47; 7-Lawrence-Nelson 3.
State results will be available at hebronjournalregister.com as soon as possible and can also be found at the NSAA website.
