Titans, Dragons golf qualify for state meet – both runners up in respective districts

There’s ten Thayer County golfers heading to the 2013 NSAA state golf meet next week. Both Thayer Central and Deshler qualified teams after finishing second in their respective district meets.

Thayer Central Titans

The Titans earned the Class D-1 runner-up trophy at Indian Trails Country Club in Beemer Tuesday, May 14, after turning in a combined score of 378. Jay Cottam led the way for the Titans shooting 80 on the Guardian Angels Central Catholic hosted course. In fact, Cottam’s impressive round led all competitors at the district meet giving him the first-place individual trophy.

Other Titan golfers and their scores included recent graduate Trent Tietjen who shot 100, and sophomores Ben Baden who had 97, Thomas Feulner with a 101 and Caleb Krupicka who turned in 105.

Team scoring went as follows: Bancroft-Rosalie 353, Thayer Central 378, Friend 388, Humphrey 392, Guardian angels Central Catholic 394, Humphrey St. Francis 407, Exeter-Milligan 428, Howells-Dodge 429, Clarkson-Leigh 439, Cedar Bluffs 449, Lyons-Decatur Northeast 483, Pawnee City 495.

Deshler Dragons

The Dragons also claimed the runner-up trophy after golfing 376 at the D-2 district meet at Indianhead Golf Course in Grand Island, Monday, May 13.

Recent graduate Brett Finke led the way finishing the Heartland sponsored course with an 88 which was enough to finish ninth in the individual top ten.
Other finishes for Deshler included recent graduates Brody Fayle 93 and Craig Meier 95, freshman Logan Schultz 100 and sophomore Hayden Loontjer 133.

Team scores included: Fullerton 360, Deshler 376, Heartland Lutheran 381, Loup City 383, Red Cloud 388, Axtell 389, Lawrence-Nelson 400, Wilcox-Hildreth 402, Cross County 406, Pleasanton 414, High Plains Community 431, Heartland 446, Shelton 461.

State Tourney

Both teams head to Kearney, Tuesday, May 21, as the 2013 NSAA Class D Golf Tournament gets underway at the Meadowlark Hills golf Course.
