County Board discusses cemeteries

The Thayer County Board of Commissioners met Aug. 21 to talk with organizations and discuss topics on the agenda.

Thayer County road superintendent Richard Heinrichs started the meeting out speaking with the group about current projects at the roads department. Among the list were spraying of the ditches, equipment repairs and tree removal. Discussion also took place about moving the wooden railroad car that is currently sitting on a lot on First Street. The group hopes to move the car to the Thayer County Museum to be used there as part of an exhibit.

In other business, petitions had been filed to ask the county to take over three cemeteries located in the county. The three cemeteries were listed on the petition as  needing care. A separate petition had to be filed for each cemetery.

After speaking on the phone with the current caretakers of the Keim Cemetery, commissioners voted to accept the petitions for Letterman and Hebron Pioneer cemeteries.  The county will now be in charge of taking care of those two cemeteries. The current caretakers of the Keim Cemetery wished to continue mowing and tending to the area.

Commissioners also met with Bryan Schardt, county weed superintendent. He asked the group for a letter of support for a grant that would help with the excavating project of the Little Blue River.

In other action commissioners:
• moved to approve inventories as submitted by appointed and elected officials.
• approved the lease of a new copier for the county clerk’s office from Eakes Office Plus.
