Local Memorial Day Services
Following is a list of area Memorial Day Services. All services will be held Monday, May 26, on Memorial Day
Hebron: Opening ceremonies will take place Monday, May 26, at 10 a.m., in front of the courthouse with the advancement of colors by combined VFW Post 5328, American Legion Post 180, Sons of the American Legion and Oregon Trail Post 180 Riders.
Guest speaker for the event will be Air Force veteran Steven Speichinger. There will also be a short talk about WWII veteran Arnold Werner, an American soldier killed in action.
Back for the second year, “Barbara Jean,” a P-51 Mustang airplane piloted by Duncan Aviation senior pilot Harry Barr, will perform a fly over.
At approximately 10:45 a.m., the ceremony will move to Rose Hill Cemetery for laying of the wreaths by the American Legion Auxiliary and 21-gun salute.
Thayer County “Court of Honor Flags” are to be raised on the courthouse lawn at 7 a.m., and retired at 4 p.m. The service organization commanders of American Legion Post 180 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5328 would appreciate any and all community involvement in this worthy effort to honor our departed veterans.
Bruning: The Durham-Mammen American Legion Post 166 will hold a Memorial Day service, Monday, May 26, at 10 a.m., at the Bruning Opera House.
The guest speaker this year will be Josh Bowman. He is the son of Craig and Tammie Bowman of Geneva and grandson of Wayne and Ravae Bowman and the late Bob and Angie Ohnesorge. Josh enlisted in the service in 2007 and was stationed in Fort Sill, Ok., for basic training. He went AIT to be an 88M truck driver and was stationed in York with the 1075th before volunteering to go to Afghanistan for a year with his unit as a 190 Calvary Scout. Josh has re-enlisted to serve our country for another six years.
Also, Johanna Kluck will sing “American Tears.”
After the service, the Legion will proceed to the Lutheran Cemetery, Public Cemetery and Harmony Cemetery.
Carleton: The Carleton American Legion and Auxiliary Post 329 will present a Memorial Day service beginning at 10:30 a.m., in the Carleton Cemetery. Pastor Jonathan Jensen will speak.
Following services, cookies and coffee will be served at the Carleton Community Building.
Hubbell: The Hubbell Legion Post 317 will hold Memorial Day services in Chester, Hubbell, and Mahaska, Kan., Monday, May 26.
The services begin at the Chester City Cemetery at 9:30 a.m., move to the St. John Lutheran Cemetery at 10 a.m., then move to the Zion Lutheran Cemetery at 10:30 a.m., and the Lamb (Williams) Cemetery at 10:45 a.m. At 11:20 a.m., services will be held at the Mahaska, Kan., cemetery followed by a final service at 11:45 a.m., at the Hubbell Cemetery.
