Memorial Day Services
Hebron: Opening ceremonies will take place Monday May 30, at 10 a.m., in front of the courthouse with the advancement of colors by combined VFW Post 5328 and American Legion Post 180. At 9:45 a.m., prior to the advancement, Andrew Powell of Wichita, Kan., will perform a bagpipe medley of hymns.
A welcome address will be conducted by American Legion Post 180 Commander Lyle Bucholzer and the opening prayer will be given by the Rev. Steven Speichinger of the First Community Church in Hebron.
Speaker Rodney Kirchhoff, Thayer County Veteran’s Service officer, will present “Remember and Honor” for the Memorial Day address and following the presentation at the courthouse, laying of the wreaths will take place right away at the Rose Hill Cemetery.
In case of rain, ceremonies will move the Hebron Country Club.
Belvidere: A Sunday morning Memorial Day service will take place in the United Church of Christ at 10 a.m. Local teacher Jane Dodes will give the Memorial Day address and local children will read patriotic essays.
Locals are invited to visit the Belvidere cemetery to view the Avenue of Flags following the church service.
Bruning: The Durham-Mammen Legion Post 166 will hold a Memorial Day service, Monday, May 30, at 10 a.m., at the Bruning Opera House followed by a salute to fallen comrades at both the Bruning and Harmony cemeteries.
Carleton: The village of Carleton will hold its Memorial Day service at 10:30 a.m., at the Carleton cemetery.
Hubbell: The Hubbell Legion Post 317 will hold Memorial Day services in both Chester and Hubbell, Monday, May 31.
The services begin at the Chester City Cemetery at 9:30 a.m., move to the St. John Lutheran Cemetery at 10 a.m., then move to the Zion Lutheran Cemetery at 10:30 a.m., and the Lamb Cemetery at 10:45 a.m. At 11:15 a.m., services will be held at the Mahaska, Kan., cemetery followed by a final service at 11:45 a.m., at the Hubbell Cemetery.
