BDS heads into district final against Osceola
The boys D1-1 district final will be held Tuesday, March 1, 7 p.m., at the Friend High School. BDS (21-4) takes on Osceola (7-14).
The D-1 No. 4 BDS Eagles were the victors of subdistrict play last week knocking out Deshler and D-1 No. 3 Pawnee City on their way to the district final Tuesday night, March 1. Results of the district final will be posted here Wednesday morning.
In the subdistrict final against Pawnee City, BDS collected the win, 47-42, in the final seconds of the game. Kendrick Holeman drove the line and hit a layup to give the team a four point lead with just 30 seconds left in the game.
“That was very big since it meant Pawnee City would need to score twice to beat us in a short amount of time,” BDS coach Fred Kluck said. “Holeman stepped up big especially when Pawnee City made it hard for our senior leader, Ryan Tegtmeier, to get his hands on the ball.”
Holeman and Tanner Ahrens hit 11 points each to lead the Eagles in the victory. Holeman also had five assists as did Tegtmeier who provided nine points. Derek Swartzendruber put up ten points and collected six rebounds for the Eagles while Luke Christensen had three points, Michael Houchin had two and Jeremy Row provided one point in the contest.
BDS trailed the first half of the game with the score reading 9-13 in the first period and 26-29 at the break. BDS then gained a one-point lead 34-33 as they headed into the final minutes.
The Eagles were 14-for-31 in field goals and 10-for-19 free throws while Pawnee City was 14-for-36 in field goals and 5-for-15 from the line. BDS controlled the boards 25-16.
On their way to the district final, BDS downed the neighboring Dragons, 58-32, in the first round of subdistrict action.
The win came behind toasty shooting (64 percent) from the Eagles and a stifling defense that wouldn’t allow Deshler any room to move. The Eagles, finishing off the first quarter 18-14, held the Dragons to just five points in the second quarter while posting 12.
“We probably played one of our better overall games of the season,” said Coach Kluck, “especially when you factor in Deshler’s ability and level of play this year.”
Height added to the defensive edge for the Eagles who controlled the boards with 40 rebounds compared to Deshler’s 15 in the game. The half ended with BDS on top 30-19.
Ryan Tegtmeier led the BDS squad with 22 points shooting 7-for-8 field goals (4-for-4 treys) and 4-for-4 from the free throw line. He was also responsible for ten rebounds, eight assists and three steals on the night while teammate Derek Swartzendruber collected 11 rebounds and provided nine points.
The Eagles continued to pressure Deshler throughout the game posting 14-8 in the third quarter and 14-5 in the fourth.
Deshler was 11-for-54 from the field and 4-for-5 from the free throw line. Taylor Horsechief led the way with 17 points (4-for-10 treys) and 3-for-3 free throws. Luke Dlouhy added nine points while Lane Baker led in rebounds with five and provided three points for the team. Clay Jones rounded out the Dragon scoring effort with three points.
Others scoring for BDS include Kendrick Holeman-12, Tanner Ahrens-6, Michael Houchin-3, Luke Christensen-2, Jeremy Row-2, Wyatt Schoenholz-2.
Deshler ends its season 16-6 and looks to lose four seniors to graduation including Taylor Horsechief, Thomas Vonderfecht, Cody Eitzmann, and Gage Baker.
In other boys subdistrict action:
Thayer Central collected a win over Friend in the first round of the C2-3 contest played at Geneva. The Titans beat the Bulldogs 58-50, then fell to Southern 45-50 Tuesday night in the semifinal game.
In Thayer Central’s contest against Friend, three Titans contributed double-digit scoring in the contest against Friend including Braydon Hergott with 15, Dietrich Brinegar with 11 and Kalen Wenske with 10. Other scoring came from Macaulay Mumm and Kesston Fink with nine each and Brian Loontjer and Dylan Long with two each.
The Titans led each quarter: 15-12, 13-11, 14-12, and 16-15.
Against Southern, the squad jumped to an early lead in the first quarter, 13-9, but were thwarted in the second and third as Southern held them to just eight points in the second, 8-16, and six points in the third, 6-8. The final period saw Thayer Central edging Southern by one point, 18-17, but it was not enough to recapture the drop in the middle of the game.
Kesston Fink led the offense posting 12 points while Kalen Wenske added ten. Other scoring came from Brayden Hergott-9, Macaulay Mumm-8, Dietrich Brinegar-3, Brian Long-2, and Dylan Loontjer-1.
