The original goal for Blue Valley Community Action Partnership of Hebron was to collect 4,000 pounds of food at the Can Care-A-Van stop June 8, but soon after the collection began, Family Development Coordinator Julie Hibbs penciled in another goal.
By 11:30 a.m., 6,490 pounds were collected and 10 minutes later, the total jumped to 6,598 pounds  because Cargill donated a $1,000 check, which was converted to pounds for Blue Valley’s count. Meanwhile, girl scouts were busy filling shelves in the back room.
Representing NBC Nebraska, morning co-anchors out of Hastings, Russ Batenhorst and station manager Al Uerling said each town they visit lends its own unique twist on the project, now in its 30th year.
Both were impressed with Hebron’s effort with its “labor force of amazing proportions” — Hebron Girl Scout Troop 941 and a pack of other volunteers.
Winners of the raffle drawings were Cathy Dick, 40-inch Sanyo flat screen television donated by Thrivent of Thayer County; Ed Brungardt, barbecue grill and accessories donated by True Value in Hebron and Thayer County Bank; Rita Luongo, barbecue grill and accessories donated by True Value in Hebron and Thayer County Bank; Cliff Rippe, custom painted rocking chair donated by Tony Once; Aaron Peterson, Alexandria Lakes Snack Shack $25 gift card donated by Snack Shack owner Deb Callaway; Kristen S., Yeti insulated mug donated by Reinke; Christy Farnstrom, Lauritzen Gardens Family of four pass donated by Lauritzen Gardens; Naomi Tuttle, $25 gift card to Lichti Oil; Mary Fangmeier, $25 gift card to The Bottle Shop and $25 gift card to Brand X Saloon; Alicia Howe, $20 gift card to Daylight Donuts; Kathy Retzlaff, $25 gift card to Central Market; Stacey McLaughlin, Welcome Sign from Pallet-Able Creations; Haley W., children’s toy from Preifert’s Pharmacy; Cliff Rippe, $25 gift card to Amanda’s Cottage; Jill Schmidt, $25 gift card to Casey’s; Nona Lee, $25 gift card to Casey’s.
